My notebook is running Fedora Core 4 with kernel 2.6.15
To check your modem specification: run /sbin/lspci | grep Modem
My notebook has:
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03)
The INTEL modem seems to work well with the SmartLink Drivers
First add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf
install snd_intel8x0m /bin/true
Then
rmmod snd_intel8x0m
Then make and make install the following.
Go to http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
and download slmodem-2.9.11-20051101.tar.gz
Then
cp -Rf /dev/slamr0 /etc/udev/devices/
Then copy the following file into /etc/init.d/
http://oasis.dit.upm.es/~jantonio/personal/aspire1410/slmodemd
Give it permissions
chmod 755 /etc/init.d/slmodemd
And edit line 18 in that file to reflect the correct country, country names can be take from
slmodemd --countrylist
Add in MALAYSIA
To test your connection:
Run /etc/init.d/slmodemd start or for clean start, reboot your laptop.
Use KPPP to setup your account and you should be able to browse the Internet from the notebook.
